About salmon and humans – culture and traditions

See how fishing and equipment have changed

Salmon have always been important to humans, but the interaction has changed and evolved over time. Milestones in the development are shown in a timeline.

Sport fishing in Norway began in the mid-19th century. The first sport fisherman - Mr. Randell - came to Lærdal in 1847. In the exhibition you can see how fishing and equipment have changed over time.

Were so many salmon actually caught in the old days? If you take a look at Prince Axel of Denmark's fishing diary from the 1930s, you will get the answer. King Harald has been fishing in the Lærdalselvi for over 70 years, and has his own place in the exhibition.
